MOAC: Why I'll Be Running 52 Marathons This Year

Written by Dr William Beer | 13 Jan 2025

In the words of Steven Bartlett (Entrepreneur and host of the podcast ‘Diary of a CEO), "The most convincing sign that someone will achieve new results in the future is new behaviour in the present."

That quote perfectly aligns with how I approach challenges. When I set goals, I like them to be big, bold and just a little bit intimidating. This year, I’ve decided to embark on my most ambitious venture yet: running a marathon every week in 2025 (oh, and more than doubling Tunley’s size…). Yes, that’s 52 marathons in one year! It’s a crazy idea, I know, but for me, it’s much more than the miles.

Even the most dedicated runners will agree that running a marathon is tough. It’s gruelling, relentless and demands some very tough pairs of shoes (Shoutout to my trusty INOV8 trailflys); and that’s precisely why I’m doing it. At Tunley Environmental, we pride ourselves on helping organisations achieve bold sustainability goals, and this challenge mirrors the determination needed to create meaningful change. By committing to this journey, I aim to grow not just as a runner but as a leader, learning lessons in perseverance, adaptability and focus that I can bring back to my role as CEO.

One of the most exciting aspects of this campaign, aptly named "Marathon of a CEO" (MOAC), is the chance to connect with other CEOs along the way. Many inspiring leaders have pledged to join me on this journey, running marathons alongside me. These shared miles will provide opportunities for meaningful conversations, collaboration and the exchange of ideas—all while facing a challenging goal together.

But the heart and soul of this journey is about giving back. Every step I take will be in support of PASIC, an incredible charity providing vital cancer support for children, young people and their families. The work they do is nothing short of inspiring, and I’m honoured to dedicate this effort to raising funds and awareness for their cause.

For those who follow my LinkedIn page, you’ll know that I’m no stranger to running. Last year, I ran 1,727 kilometres—surpassing my original goal of 30 kilometres per week, including 1 ultra and 1 marathon. This year, I’m setting my sights even higher, aiming to run 2,184 kilometres by the end of 2025. It’s a daunting target, but one that I look forward to completing and, fingers-crossed, maybe even surpassing.

We’re barely two weeks into January, and I’ve already completed three marathons, covering a total of 84 kilometres. It’s a promising start, and I’m excited to see how far this journey will take me.

If you’d like to learn more about this challenge or follow along with my progress, you can find updates and ways to support the campaign. AND, most importantly, if you’re a CEO and want to run one alongside me PLEASE reach out, I will even carry your water and food…
