Tunley Environmental is now an official partner of Green Marine, a leading environmental certification program for the North American maritime industry. This partnership marks a significant step forward in our mission to promote sustainable practices and reduce the environmental impact of the maritime sector.
The Green Marine Partnership
Green Marine is a voluntary environmental certification program established to address the maritime industry’s need for greener practices. Its rigorous program focuses on measurable results, challenging participants to improve continuously across areas such as greenhouse gas emissions, invasive species control and waste management. By promoting transparency and accountability, Green Marine’s certifications help ports, shipowners, terminals and shipyards take concrete actions toward environmental conservation. The program is supported by over 175 participants, including shipping companies, port authorities, terminal operators, shipyards and the St. Lawrence Seaway Corporations across Canada, the United States and a presence in Europe.
Becoming a Green Marine partner offers us the opportunity to work directly with key players in the maritime industry, supporting sustainability goals with our expertise in carbon reduction, energy efficiency and climate resilience. Through our role as a Green Marine partner, we will focus on expanding best practices for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and community impacts.
Tunley Environmental’s Work on the Port of Detroit’s Net Zero Plan
The announcement of this partnership comes on the heels of the Port of Detroit being awarded $24 million in funding for climate-friendly upgrades by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of the $3 billion Clean Ports Program. Tunley Environmental’s Net Zero strategy for the port, led by Sustainability Scientists Dr Robert Moorcroft and Emily Alexander, helped contribute to the port’s grant application. This strategy involved carrying out a comprehensive decarbonisation and air quality improvement plan and outlining specific reduction targets. Through this, the team identified the most impactful areas for carbon reduction and sustainability enhancements.
