Terrafend Case Study
To measure the environmental impact of their Ambimization® process in use at a Scott Bader site.
Terrafend are a cleantech company, who are on a mission to reinvent cleaning processes and empower manufacturers to reduce risk, waste and their carbon footprint. They are achieving this through their patented Ambimization® Wash Fluid (AWF) process, using Ambimization® Wash Fluid to replace harmful solvents in the cleaning process. This reduces hazardous waste and increases usability.
This project worked with one of Terrafend's clients, Scott Bader, who are a global chemical manufacturer of adhesives, composites, and functional polymers. They are looking for the right solutions that they can provide to their customers problems. Wanting to provide safer working conditions, sustainability and re-usability of the product, they started running tests using the AWF process.
Terrafend and Scott Bader together worked with Tunley Environmental® to measure the environmental impact of Terrafend's AWF process in use at a Scott Bader site. In this case study we speak to Benjamin Vigneau-Singh from Terrafend and Gareth Mead from Scott Bader to discuss the findings from the Comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). In this assessment, Carbon Reduction Scientist, Dr Nathan Wood compared the AWF system to a conventional solvent based solution which used acetone. During the assessment, all stages from A1 - C4 in the LCA were assessed.
The findings from this LCA were: the total annual Greenhouse Gas Emissions for the AWF system accounted for 6.6 tCO2e, this is significantly lower than the 108.6 tCO2e found for the former solvent system. This represents a dramatic 93.9% reduction in emissions, underscoring the effectiveness of Terrafends Ambimization® Wash Fluid compared to the conventional wash system. By changing to the AWF system, Scott Bader have reduced their annual process emissions by 101.9 tCO2e/yr.
For Terrafend, this assessment has allowed them to provide their client with annual emission reductions on the product they were providing. For Scott Bader, this meant that the safety aspect of moving away from solvent based fluids could be achieved, whilst it being a more reusable system, it reduces the amount of hazardous waste going to landfill. They have demonstrated a keen interest in expanding the use of Ambimization®. Their vision to unlock the potential of sustainable solutions indicates their desire to transfer the environmentally friendly cleaning solution, Ambimization®, across their global manufacturing sites. This aligns with their commitment to sustainability and health and safety improvements, showcasing their intent to make a positive social and environmental impact wherever they operate. To conclude, we asked Benjamin if he would recommend others to follow in their footsteps and he replied "Implementing Ambimization® is a simple change that has a huge impact on sustainability goals, site safety and waste reduction. We’re pleased Tunley Environmental were able to help us measure the brilliant results from this site at Scott Bader, and we’re excited to see even more as we roll out across future sites."
Tunley would like to thank both participants in this case study, and it was another successful outcome for all involved. We hope to support both further on their sustainability journey.
