Airport Decarbonisation Cover

AIRPORT SUSTAINABILITY SERVICES

Airports are pivotal in global connectivity, but they also contribute significantly to carbon emissions. Tunley offers airport decarbonization and biodiversity services tailored specifically for airports aiming to reduce their carbon footprint. Our approach is data-driven, and aligned with international standards, including the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program.

AIRPORT SUSTAINABILITY

In order to bring international aviation into compliance with the Paris Agreement, the 41st International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Assembly set a goal of net zero carbon emissions for international aviation by 2050.

As a result, airports around the world are trying to lessen their carbon footprint; the first stage in this process is developing a net zero plan that is supported by scientific targets and carbon reduction initiatives.

Our expertise ensures compliance with ISO14064 and other relevant standards to secure and maintain accreditation. Each airport is unique, meaning that your airport will need to receive it's own bespoke plan to reach net zero.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Reduction in Greenhouse gas Emissions: Mitigates climate change by lowering the airport's carbon footprint.

Improved Air Quality: Benefits airport workers and nearby residents by reducing emissions from ground operations and facilities.

ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY

Cost savings: Reduces operational costs trough energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy sources.

Compliance and investment attraction: Ensures regulatory compliance and attracts investments from stakeholders interested in sustainable practices.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Enhanced public health: Improves health outcomes for employees, passengers, and local communities through better air quality.

Community support and job creation: Builds goodwill and creates employment opportunities in green sectors.

OPERATIONAL AND STRATEGIC RESILIENCE

Improved efficiency and future-proofing: Enhances operational efficiency, reduces downtime, and prepares the airport for future regulatory changes.

Innovation and competitiveness: Positions the airport as a leader in sustainability and innovation, enhancing its competitive edge.

FUTURE TARGETS
The Airports Council International (ACI) has set a goal for airports worldwide to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2025.
ELECTRIFYING
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) indicates that transitioning to electric ground support equipment can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95% compared to diesel-powered.
IMPLEMENTATION
Over 500 airports are now part of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programs, which supports airports in managing and reducing their carbon footprints.
BIODIVERSITY
The ACI are encouraging airports to include biodiversity as a key component of environmental strategies. Just over 100 airports globally have implemented biodiversity.

WHY DO WE NEED IMPLEMENT AIRPORT SUSTAINABILITY?

Airports across the world run day and night, contributing significantly to global carbon emissions through ground support equipment, energy and water consumption, general and hazardous waste, and disruption to natural ecosystems. Climate change can be countered by reducing emissions through the implementation of net zero plans and sustainable practices.

Examples of carbon reduction initiatives within airports:

  • Switching to renewable energy sources
  • Investing in hybrid, electric or renewable gas-powered vehicles/equipment
  • Encouraging staff, passengers and visitors to use public transport to arrive at the airport
  • Enforce recycling initiatives
  • Reduce taxiing times
  • Switching to energy-efficient lighting systems throughout the airport
