ACA Airport Accreditation

AIRPORT DECARBONISATION THROUGH AIRPORT CARBON ACCREDITATION

The Airport Carbon Accreditation assess carbon reduction efforts. It provides airports with a common framework and is the only institutionally endorsed, global carbon management certification programme for airports.

Empowering Airports Towards Decarbonisation

AIRPORT CARBON ACCREDITATION

Tunley Environmental provides specialised Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) verification services globally. The ACA Scheme, introduced by the Airports Council International (ACI) in 2009, is the leading voluntary carbon management standard for airports. A certified ACA verifier must independently verify the airport's carbon footprint and management strategies, ensuring airports meet rigorous ISO 14064 standards.

ONLY 16% OF UK AIRPORTS HAVE JOINED ACA. THAT'S 24 OUT OFF 144

GLOBALLY, THERE ARE 574 AIRPORTS WHO HAVE JOINED ACA

THE ACA ACCREDITATION IS ACTIVE IN 86 COUNTRIES ACROSS THE WORLD

ENHANCE YOUR AIRPORT'S SUSTAINABILITY CREDENTIALS

It's time to get ahead of your competitors and join the Airport Carbon Accreditation journey.

WHY BECOME ACA ACCREDITED?

Becoming ACA accredited places airports at the forefront of sustainable practices, demonstrating commitment to environmental stewardship. With 571 airports on the path to ACA accreditation out of 41,700 worldwide, by joining, your airport would also be able to showcase:

Market Leadership

Achieve Level 5 ACA Accreditation: Stand out in the market by achieving the highest level of ACA accreditation. Differentiate your airport from competitors through strong marketing and communication efforts.

ATTRACTIVENESS TO STAKEHOLDERS Appeal to Environmentally Conscious Stakeholders: Attract environmentally conscious airlines and passengers by showcasing your airport's commitment to sustainability. Strengthen relationships with stakeholders, including airlines, passengers, and local communities.
OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY

Optimised Resource Management: Identify opportunities for energy efficiency improvements and cost savings. Develop bespoke carbon management plans aligned with airport operations and objectives.

EXPERT SUPPORT AND INNOVATION Access to Expertise and Innovation: Access innovative solutions and best practices to optimise energy use and reduce emissions. Receive tailored advice, strategies, and ongoing support from Tunley Environmental to maintain and improve carbon management practices. THE 7 LEVELS OF THE ACCREDITATION

We will work with airports to support them through all 7 levels of the airport carbon accreditation.

  • LEVEL 1 MAPPING
  • LEVEL 2 REDUCTION
  • LEVEL 3 OPTIMISATION
  • LEVEL 3+ NEUTRALITY
  • LEVEL 4 TRANSFORMATION
  • LEVEL 4+ TRANSITION
  • LEVEL 5 ACHIEVEMENT

MAPPING

ACA_level_1_logo_mapping_positive-300x212

Measuring a baseline, an airport is classed as business, therefore the carbon footprint is measured in accordance with ISO 14064.

  • Identify Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions sources as outlined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
  • Gather data and calculate the annual carbon emissions for each source.
  • Collate the information into a detailed carbon footprint report.

REDUCTION

ACA_level_2_logo_reduction_positive-300x212

Carbon management and progress towards a reduced carbon footprint.

  • Achieve all requirements from Level 1: Mapping
  • Evidence of carbon management procedures including target setting (e.g. Energy reduction, clean energy supply, alternative fuels)
  • Prove there has been a reduction in the carbon footprint compared to the emissions of previous years.

OPTIMISATION

ACA_level_3_logo_optimisation_positive-300x212

Third party engagement in carbon footprint management (e.g. ground handlers, catering and air traffic control).

  • Achieve all requirements from Level 1: Mapping and Level 2: Reduction.
  • Assess more of the carbon footprint by including Scope 3 emissions.
  • Scope 3 emissions can include, but not limited to
    • landing & take-off cycle emissions
    • surface access to the airport for passengers and staff
    • staff business travel emissions.
  • Present findings of third party engagement to reduce wider airport-based emissions.

NEUTRALITY

ACA_level_3_logo_neutrality_positive-300x212

Carbon neutrality for direct emissions by offsetting.

  • Achieve all requirements from Level 1: Mapping, Level 2: Reduction and Level 3: Optimisation.
  • Offset any remaining Scope 1 and 2 emissions, additionally any emissions from staff business travel, using the correct internationally recognised offsets.

TRANSFORMATION

ACA_level_4_logo_transformation_positive-300x212

Transforming airport operations and those of its business partners to achieve absolute emissions reductions.

  • Outline a policy commitment to reduce all emissions.
  • Include extra (to Level 3) Scope 1 and Scope 3 emissions into carbon footprint.
  • Create a long-term emissions reduction target and align it with the IPCC 1.5°C or 2°C pathways.
  • Develop a Carbon Management Plan to achieve the target.
  • Develop a Stakeholder Partnership Plan.

TRANSITION

ACA_level_4_logo_transition_positive-300x212

Compensation for residual emissions with reliable offsets.

  • Achieve all requirements of Level 4: Transformation
  • Offset any remaining Scope 1 and 2 emissions as well as emissions from business travel, using the correct internationally recognised offsets.

ACHIEVEMENT

level-five-logo

Level 5 is the topmost level in Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

  • Submit a verified carbon footprint for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, as well as all categories of Scope 3 emissions as set out in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
  • Achieve and maintain ≥ 90% CO2 emissions reductions in Scope 1 and 2, as well as committing to net zero in Scope 3 by 2050 or sooner.
  • Apply for credible carbon removals for excess emissions.
  • Develop a Carbon Management Plan to achieve the emissions targets.
  • Develop a Stakeholder Partnership Plan to achieve net zero for Scope 3 emissions through value chain engagement and drive third parties to also deliver emissions reductions.
